पवित्र श्रावण मास में कांवड़ लेकर श्रद्धालु निकल पड़े हैं अपने भोले बाबा से मिलन की यात्रा की ओर। गली-मोहल्ले ‘बोल बम’, ‘हर हर महादेव’ के जयकारों से गूंजने लगे हैं।

माना जाता है कि रावण पहला कांवड़िया था, जो अपने आराध्य बाबा बैद्यनाथ से मिलने के लिए पैदल ही कंटकाकीर्ण मार्ग की यात्रा पर चल पड़ा था। एक मान्यता यह भी है कि भगवान राम पहले कांवड़िये थे, जो मीलों यात्रा कर रामेश्वरम पहुंचे और वहां शिवलिंग की पूजा-अराधना की।

सत्य चाहे जो भी हो, हिंदू धर्म में यात्राओं का बहुत महत्व है। समय-समय पर श्रद्धालु चार धाम यात्रा, अमरनाथ यात्रा, कैलाश मानसरोवर यात्रा करते रहते हैं। सभी माह में श्रेष्ठ श्रावण में भी कांवड़िए दूर-दूर से यात्राएं पूरी कर भोले शंकर का गंगा जल से अभिषेक करते हैं।
