सुषमा स्वराज का जन्म 15 फरवरी 1952 को हरियाणा के अम्बला में हुआ था। उनका राजनीती का सफर 70 के दशक से शुरू हुआ था। उनके पति, स्वराज कौशल, सोशलिस्ट नेता जॉर्ज फ़र्नान्डिस के करीबी थे, और इस कारण ही वे भी 1975 में फ़र्नान्डिस की विधिक टीम का हिस्सा बन गयी। आपातकाल के समय उन्होंने जयप्रकाश नारायण के सम्पूर्ण क्रांति आंदोलन में बढ़ चढ़ कर हिस्सा लिया। आपातकाल की समाप्ति के बाद वह जनता पार्टी की सदस्य बन गयी। और 1977 में पहली बार उन्होंने अम्बाला छावनी विधानसभा क्षेत्र से हरियाणा विधानसभा के लिए विधायक का चुनाव जीता और चौधरी देवी लाल की सरकार में श्रम मंत्री रही। सबसे कम उम्र में कैबिनेट मंत्री बनने का रिकार्ड बनाया था।
70 के दशक में भारतीय जनता पार्टी के गठन पर वह भी इसमें शामिल हो गयी। इसके बाद 1987 से 1990 तक फिर अम्बाल से विधायक रहीं। 1990 में उन्हें राज्यसभा के सदस्य के रूप में निर्वाचित किया गया, जहाँ वह 1996 तक रही।
12 अक्टूबर 1998 को दिल्ली की पहली महिला मुख्यमंत्री के रूप में कार्यभार संभाला। हालांकि, 3 दिसंबर 1998 को उन्होंने अपनी विधानसभा सीट से इस्तीफा दे दिया, और राष्ट्रीय राजनीति में वापस लौट आई। अप्रैल 2000 में वह उत्तर प्रदेश के राज्यसभा सदस्य के रूप में संसद में वापस लौट आईं। 1 नवंबर 2000 को उत्तर प्रदेश के विभाजन पर उन्हें उत्तराखण्ड में स्थानांतरित कर दिया गया। जिस पद पर वह सितंबर 2000 से जनवरी 2003 तक रही।
2003 में उन्हें स्वास्थ्य, परिवार कल्याण और संसदीय मामलों में मंत्री बनाया गया, और मई 2004 में राजग की हार तक वह केंद्रीय मंत्री रही। 21 दिसंबर 2009 को लालकृष्ण आडवाणी की जगह 15वीं लोकसभा में सुषमा स्वराज विपक्ष की नेता बनी और मई 2014 में भाजपा की विजय तक वह इसी पद पर आसीन रही,और 2014 में वह भारत की पहली महिला विदेश मंत्री बनी।
भाजपा में राष्ट्रीय मन्त्री बनने वाली पहली महिला सुषमा के नाम पर कई रिकार्ड दर्ज़ हैं। वे भाजपा की राष्ट्रीय प्रवक्ता बनने वाली पहली महिला हैं, वे कैबिनेट मन्त्री बनने वाली भी भाजपा की पहली महिला हैं, वे दिल्ली की पहली महिला मुख्यमन्त्री थीं और भारत की संसद में सर्वश्रेष्ठ सांसद का पुरस्कार पाने वाली पहली महिला भी वे ही हैं। वे दिल्ली की पहली महिला मुख्यमंत्री और देश में किसी राजनीतिक दल की पहली महिला प्रवक्ता बनने की उपलब्धि भी उन्हीं के नाम दर्ज है।
