नई दिल्ली: भारत के पूर्व राष्ट्रपति प्रणब मुखर्जी को आज राष्ट्रपति रामनाथ कोविंद द्वारा सर्वोच्च नागरिक पुरस्कार भारत रत्न से नवाजा गया। इसके साथ ही भारत रत्न पुरस्कार मरणोपरांत सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता नानाजी देशमुख और असम प्रख्यात गायक भूपेन हजारिका को दिया गया। तीनों को जनवरी 2019 में इस सम्मान के लिए चुना गया था।
स्वर्गवासी सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता नानाजी देशमुख की जगह दीन दयाल रिसर्च इंस्टिट्यूट के चेयरमैन वीरेंद्रजीत सिंह ने भारत रत्न सम्मान ग्रहण किया।
स्वर्गवासी गायक भूपेन हजारिका की जगह उनके बेटे तेज हजारिका ने भारत रत्न सम्मान लिया है।
पूर्व राष्ट्रपति प्रणव मुखर्जी का राजनीतिक जीवन लगभग पांच दशकों का रहा। वे कांग्रेस में शामिल रहे। प्रणव मुखर्जी इंदिरा गांधी, राजीव गांधी, पी. वी. नरसिम्हा राव और मनमोहन सिंह के नेतृत्व वाली सरकारों में प्रणव मुखर्जी ने प्रमुख पदो को संभाला। 2012-2017 तक वे भारत के राष्ट्रपति रहे। 2009-2012 तक वे वित्तमंत्री भी रहे।
